- A Few Warnings About "Smart Drinks"
-
-
- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- QUESTION: I saw a report on television about a bar where they serve fancy
- drinks that are supposed to give you energy, and more important "the smarts".
- We don't have that kind of place where I live, but wonder if I can get the
- stuff to make the drink at home. If it could help with my school work, I know
- my father would give me the money. I certainly could use some help. Can you
- give me the address to write to?
-

-
- ANSWER: Yours was not the only question about this subject in today's mail,
- so I suppose I will have to provide some kind of response. I did not see the
- program, but know what you are talking about. These drinks, called "smart
- drinks" are sold in places called "smart bars" to people who pay about $5.00
- for the stuff, and by that action show that they aren't as smart as they
- should be. The drinks contain no alcohol (that's good), and are concocted of
- various nutrients (amino acids), some vitamins (that's OK), and herbs. They
- may contain lots of other things, but rarely do the bars divulge their
- contents. I don't think that the medical claims, such as energy and
- stimulation of your mind, are written out either, for that would make them
- susceptible to regulations by the Food and Drug Administration who have
- authority over medications. And from what I have heard, I wouldn't want
- anyone to be mixing my medications in the manner that these drinks are
- handled. The fact is that there is no basis for any of these claims. While
- it is true that various nutrients can help a person regain strength when they
- suffer from malnutrition or nutritional deficiencies, you don't get a mental
- jolt from drinking these beverages at a bar. About the best thing I can think
- of is they provide liquid replacement for the sweat you work up dancing in
- these establishments, so you won't suffer from dehydration. But then water
- does the same thing. I don't have an address for any sources, if I did I
- wouldn't recommend it to you anyway. Use the money for the electricity you
- need to burn the midnight lamp. You can get your mental stimulation from
- study, and the jolt from the great grades you will receive for your efforts.
- I know this sounds corny and old fashioned, but the truth often does.
